Volunteer Opportunities

able2sail is volunteer operated and managed so there are lots of opportunities to get involved across the charity.

We are always looking for new crew, first mates and skippers to keep us sailing. All levels of sailing experience are welcome.

All of our volunteers are both passionate sailors and disability advocates who want to provide inclusive experiences on the water.

Who we need

We are actively recruiting for the following volunteer roles:

  • Crew
  • First Mates
  • Skippers

Whilst our skippers require a minimum of RYA Day Skipper (or equivalent experience), for all other roles there are no minimum requirements although RYA Competent Crew recommended.

All new volunteers undergo PVG checks and are expected to attend introductory assessments/training before joining client sailing.

What you can expect

able2sail provides regular training opportunities to support your development (including first aid, on the water and disability awareness training).

An annual volunteer training conference offers an opportunity to meet fellow volunteers and we host  regular social activities throughout the year.

All safety equipment is provided including wet-weather clothing.

In return we ask that you volunteer with us at least four times a year.

Volunteer with us

Our trips are always subject to weather and sailing conditions. We sail with a skipper, first mate and usually four crew on board. Crew are there to sail the boat and support our clients but can’t be responsible for personal care and any medical requirements.  A companion/carer must accompany the client and undertake that role.  During the sail we encourage everyone onboard to contribute to the sailing experience.

What Our Volunteers Say

Skipper

Able2sail skipper Norman Beasant

“able2sail seemed like an excellent way to get out on the water regularly and to be involved in a very worthwhile cause sharing the joy of sailing.

The experience of sailing with the clients and the positive feedback from them has been personally very rewarding.

Also, by sailing with some very experienced skippers, my own sailing competencies have been much improved.

The whole team are a great bunch of similarly motivated people and the days out out on the water are always very enjoyable.

In summary, it’s a win-win scenario for all involved – both clients and crew.”

First Mate

“able2sail is a a wonderful and kind environment in which to make new friendships with those who share an ambition to help people young and old to experience the wonders of being under sail.

The charity provides a highly supportive learning environment in which you are free to challenge and develop your sailing and leadership skills.

The sheer delight of sharing and listening to amazing stories from both clients and their carers – many of which are deeply inspiring.

Volunteering gives me a feeling of pride and accomplishment of sailing a large yacht safely and competently, developing diverse skills at a range of levels.”

Crew

sailor Jory Martin

“Our maintenance team makes sure our yacht is ready for sailing all season long. There are other volunteer support roles including admin, communications and finance undertaken by willing hands.”
